ISO 22000

Food Safety Management Systems

There has been a continuous increase in consumer demand for safe food. This has led to the development of various food safety standards. The growing number of national standards has led to confusion.

Consequently, there is a need for international harmonization and ISO aims to meet this need with ISO 22000:

The standard is complimentary to ISO9001, in that ISO 22000 addresses specifically the issues relating to food safety and uses an approach that can be integrated with that of ISO 9001. ISO 22000 is not a replacement for ISO 9001, however businesses in the food sector may see it as having greater commercial importance to their business than ISO 9001, particularly as there is increasing pressure on the food industry to demonstrate that it is effectively managing food safety, following the highly publicized food scares around the world.

The standard specifies a number of key requirements, including

  • Planning, implementing, maintaining and updating a food safety management system.
  • Identification of hazards and determination of risks to food safety using HACCP principles.
  • Compliance with applicable food safety related regulatory requirements.
  • Development and implementation of pre-requisite programmes and/or HACCP plans as a way of controlling food safety hazards.
  • Continual improvement and updating of the food safety management system.
  • Interactive communication with interested parties (enforcement agencies, customers, suppliers, consumers) on food safety issues.

HACCP

Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points HACCP is a preventative approach or ‘risk assessment’ tool for identifying hazards, determining the risks associated with those hazards and the implementation of program to reduce, eliminate or manage these risks within the food chain. This approach was developed from the concept of Failure Mode Effects Analysis or FMEA.

The key controls used are called critical control points where predetermined points for quantifiable reduction or elimination of a hazard are identified and have to be managed. Pre-requisite program define general control measures of operational and environmental conditions necessary for the production of safe food. These control measures are identified through a Hazard analysis, as for critical control points or specific measures. Managing food safety risk is fundamental to survival within the food industry.

Systems failures occur because of inadequate risk assessment, management, corrective action and control. Cost of failure can include loss of product, damage to reputation, loss of major customers and damage to product brands.

During the last few years the food industry has been affected by an escalation of legislation and regulations. National legislation is increasingly putting the responsibility of ensuring the production, supply and sale of safe food onto food organizations. This is as a direct result of food scares and the consequential economic damage it has caused in some countries around the world and in order to reduce the burden of proof and cost on national enforcement agencies that inspect food facilities.

GLOBAL GAP

GLOBALG.A.P. is an internationally recognized set of farm standards dedicated to Good Agricultural Practices (GAP).

Through certification, producers demonstrate their adherence to GLOBALG.A.P. standards.

For consumers and retailers, the GLOBALG.A.P. certificate is reassurance that food reaches accepted levels of safety and quality, and has been produced sustainably, respecting the health, safety and welfare of workers, the environment, and in consideration of animal welfare issues. Without such reassurance, farmers may be denied access to markets.

GLOBALG.A.P. is becoming a compulsory standard as most retailers now require it as evidence of good agricultural/fish farming practices. Producers of crops and farmers raising animals or fish to produce food for human consumption need GLOBALG.A.P. certification. Without it, their products cannot be stocked by those retailers. Increasingly, exporters to Europe and other markets areas (Asia and America) also need to comply with the production standards determined by the GLOBALG.A.P. certification scheme.

NON-GMO

As a result of increasing consumer concerns about the long-term health and environmental effects of the food we eat, the market responds with an increasing demand for certified non-GMO food. To meet this demand, we as IG have developed together with our partners the Non-GMO Production Standard (NGPS).

The NGPS verifies the accuracy of Non-GMO Production claims in products by ensuring that ingredients were not genetically engineered by the use of modern biotechnology. The use of the NGPS logo serves as a further explicitly-stated guarantee of the quality? of the product. The certification is applicable at all levels of the supply chain to organizations active in cultivation, production, processing, storage, distribution, logistics and/or trade. Products falling within the scope should comprise of one or more agricultural products, regardless of their purpose.

The Non-GMO Production Standard The standard ensures no genetically engineered ingredients are used in the production of the end product. The standard aims to verify this by putting forth a list of requirements that leads to a strong system of internal and external verifications at the facilities that produce/process the (end-)product.

The Management System (MS) shall have a documented sampling plan that is based on the MS and the associated risk assessment. Laboratories performing tests to assess the genetically engineered material content of a sample, shall be certified with ISO 17025 for the specific activity of genetically engineered material testing. Companies in compliance with the NGPS may communicate the claim ‘Certified Non-GMO Production’ on the product label with reference to the NGPS. To the approved organic standards belong EU organic, NPOP, USDA organic and IFOAM based organic standards.

Benefits of Certification

IG certifies companies all over the world and offers a wide range of certification programmes, some of which can be linked to organic certifications. Our global network of offices allows us to make certification more efficient and cost effective, whilst upholding the same stringent professional auditing and certification procedures. Through third-party verification, we motivate your (quality) claim independently towards your clients. FSA

FSA Farm Sustainability Assessment, a tool from the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative to engage, assess and improve the sustainability practices at farm level.

IG is a global service provider for the agricultural industry and officially approved by SAI Platform to perform Farmer Sustainability Assessments (FSA). In this program we perform verification services with the supplier and the farmers they source from.

SAI Platform was created in 2002 by the food industry to support the development of sustainable agriculture worldwide. Nowadays, SAI Platform has over 90 members across the global food and drink value chain and covers all major commodities. SAI Platform promotes the development and implementation of sustainable agriculture by developing tools and guidance.

One of these tools is the FSA. Through the FSA programme, SAI Platform strives to support farmers and companies in moving towards sustainable production of agricultural materials.

The FSA checklist has 112 questions covering social, environmental and economic topics. There are three implementation options:
  1. 1-Benchmarking: a farm or farm management group complies with a benchmarked standard and they can claim a performance (Bronze, Silver or Gold) level accordingly
  2. 2-Self-assessment and verification: the farm or farm management group conducts self-assessments and these are verified by troll
  3. 3-Hybrid: combination between options 1 and 2.

To go through the FSA process, three steps can be distinguished:

  1. 1-Engage: the farm management group should be aware of the FSA sustainability requirements
  2. 2-Assess: the agricultural practices of the supply base are assessed
  3. 3-Improve: the focus is on continuous improvement, working towards better agricultural practices.

FSA is a verification programme and third party verification is obligatory for companies and farms that want to publicly claim a certain FSA performance level of their farm supply base and/or number of farmers in the FSA programme. Third party verification consists of a farm management system verification and on site farm assessments.

Benefits of certification

FSA helps both companies and farmers to save time and resources. For companies:

  • provides one single, industry-aligned, and widespread tool to meet sustainable sourcing targets
  • helps to reduce the burden of having to assess and verify multiple farm practices using different schemes and codes.
For farmers:
  • saves time & resources as using just one reference tool means not having to complete multiple assessments for multiple customers
  • helps improve their practices and increases opportunities to do business with companies interested in sourcing sustainably.
